SPOTLIGHTING A MEMBER OF THE
AFRICAN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SUN LAKES
By Naomi Bryson
Jacqueline Slaughter is in the AAASL spotlight for this month. She proudly says that her greatest passion in life is to spend time with her grandchildren. This may be her greatest passion, but there is much more to know about her.
She is the Events Coordinator for the AAASL. This means that she must select and provide guidance to individuals to plan and execute events for the entire year. Some of the events are the Welcome Back Pot Luck Gathering, Jazz in the Park, Holiday Gala, Old Fashion Picnic and short trips. For many of these events, she coordinates with the Sun Lakes II Active Lifestyle Director, David Guthrie. Her greatest challenges, as EventsCoordinator, are deciding on dates for events and coordinating with other events.
She likes to stay busy. In addition to her volunteer work with AAASL, she enjoys bowling, riding her bike, making quilts, and reading fiction. She also works part-time at the Sun Lakes Sprouts Farmers Market. She has expertise in working with people and organizing activities. Her employment experiencesat the AAA Automobile Club and Cuyahoga County (Ohio)have prepared her for the position as AAASL Event Coordinator.
She and her husband Freddie have travelled extensively. She has fond memories of their Caribbean cruises, visits to Paris, Palm Springs, Bermuda, the Dolly Parton Boat Ride, and the Grand Canyon. At the top of her bucket list is a visit to Vietnam and Hawaii. Freddie served our country during the war in Vietnam.
Jacquie and Freddie have lived in Sun Lakes for over seven years. How did she get from Cleveland, Ohio to Sun Lakes? She tells the story that involves advertising and marketing success stories. She had received several brochures advertising the Robson Resort Communities; they decided to visit Sun Lakes, and the rest is history.
She and Freddie have been married for nearly 13 years. They became a blended family which includes two sons and one daughter. When asked how she met Freddie, her smile broadens. She was at the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Office for a job change. As she started to leave, when she stepped off the elevator, she saw County Sheriff Freddie (Division of Protective Services) in uniform. He was “Mr. Right.” A brief conversationwith each other ensued that led them to marriage.
The AAASL is a non-profit organization that brings together, in a spirit of fellowship, a group of individuals residing in Sun Lakes, AZ and within a 100-mile radius (of Sun Lakes) who share similar interests, seek recreation and social interaction. Rosetta Sheer is the current president. Anyone interested should visit the website at AAASL.club.

ALL SALES ARE FINAL
A.A.A.S.L. Members,
Subject: Increase in AAASL annual dues.
At our meeting of October 5, 2024, the Board proposed an increase in the annual dues,
justifying that the expenditures for the website (management of, domain fees, processing
fees), post office box rental, postage, paper and other miscellaneous items, exceeded the
total annual dues from the membership. Further, it was noted that because the website
imposes a 2.3% processing fee plus $.30 on each transaction, the club actually receives
$19.24 instead of $20 for dues payments. After discussion a motion was carried by the
membership that we
a. increase the annual dues to $30 per year, effective November 1, 2024, and
b. that the processing fee on this and all website transactions be included in the
cost of the ticket purchase.
This new increase does not apply to anyone who has or will have paid this year’s $20
(dues) prior to November 1. They are considered fully paid up.
On November 1, 2024, if you use the website for payment, your dues will be $31, which
includes the processing fee. If you pay by check via the post office box, there is no
processing fee and the payment is $30. Likewise, all future events paid for via the post
office box will not have a processing fee.
Prices for all future events, including the upcoming Holiday Gala, will include a
processing fee when using the website.
Respectfully,
Rosetta Sheer
A.A.A.S.L. Board President
